Circuit and Race Information :

Race Date:         12 May 2013
Circuit Name:         Circuit de Catalunya
First Grand Prix:     1991
Number of Laps:     66
Circuit Length:     4.655 km
Race Distance:         307.104 km
Lap Record:         1:24.670 – K Raikkonen (2008)

NOTES:

Tyres: Pirelli will be bringing the hard and medium compounds. The hard compound is new and will be along the same lines as the 2012 compound which will feature a wider working temperature window. Pirelli Director of Motorsports Paul Hembery gives us this insight, “We’d expect the medium tyre to still be significantly faster and this is the one that the teams are likely to qualify on, whereas the hard is likely to be the preferred race tyre.”.  Pirelli’s Mario Isola has also said that the circuit’s surface is also quite abrasive and that there will be a large amount of energy put through the tyres, especially on the left side of the car. Pirelli will also be bringing an extra set of tyres in the way of a new experimental compound for FP1.  This extra set will not be limited to third drivers.

DRS Zone: 1 – Detection between turns 8 and 9, Activation after turn 9 on the short straight leading into turn 10.

DRS Zone: 2 – Detection upon approach to Turn 16, Activation after Turn 16 on main straight.  Top speed expected 305km/h in 7th gear. (NB. a second DRS Zone may be announced)

Braking: This circuit is not particularly hard on brakes. Turn 10 is a hairpin right hander which pulls about 3Gs and is probably the toughest test for the brakes.

General:
Lateral track with high percentage of high speed corners
Maximising slow speed traction is important through sector three
Medium brake energy
Bumps at entry of T9 and braking into T10
Grip level and balance change with different weather conditions (track temp and wind direction)
Understeer is the typical balance issue in the high speed corners T3 and T9
First gear is not used on the track
Drivers usually prefer to run through T9 without downshifting
