F1: 2012 QANTAS AUSTRALIAN GP – Welcome to Albert Park

by on March 13, 2012

The Fluff:

The 2012 F1 season kicks off this weekend in the midst of the wonderful Australian landscape just south of Melbourne.  Cameras are placed to catch the action throughout the street circuit around Albert Park Lake.  The usual lush green surroundings coupled with the blue waters of the man-made lake make it a visually appealing place for both drivers and fans.

The Nitty Gritty:

The Circuit is 5.3km in length and is lapped 58 times for a total of approximately 307.6km. It is considered a medium to high downforce track with top speeds exceeding the 300km mark.  The current track configuration has 16 corners in total which translates into a relatively high level of brake wear.  Engines will not be heavily strained as less than 70% of the track is expected to be run at full throttle.

The Sticky Stuff:

The tarmac around the circuit is rather slick. Tyres tend to marble and deteriorate quickly if the temperatures aren’t warm enough.  This season, Pirelli is bringing the soft and Medium P-Zero compounds which should be realitively close in perforance as we have seen in the pre-season tests thus far.  I would expect the life span of both compounds to be around the 20-30 lap range.
