F1: Spanish GP Qualifying Observations

With an interesting twist, Red Bull may have dictated the race tyre strategy.  While everyone had gone out in Q1 on a set of the Pirelli hard compound, Red Bull sent out both drivers on the softs.  This prompted everyone else to panic and come back out on the softs themselves.  Q1 ended with Hamilton much faster than anyone else setting a time in the 1m22s and Bruno Senna pushing too hard right out of contention for Q2

Kobayashi kicked off Q2 with an underwhelming 1:24 and change, quickly smashed by Lewis by two seconds after Rosberg did some kerb hopping in his Mercedes.  Button continued to complain about balance as he had issues with understeer in Q1 and lack of rear grip in Q2.   Hamilton ended the second session behind the Williams of Maldonado in a shocker. Massa failed to make Q3 again he will start 17th.  It seems that Ferrari’s updates were not enough to claw back their rivals.  Also out in Q2 surprisingly were Jenson Button and Mark Webber.  So Q2 ends  1. MAL, 2. HAM 3. GRO, 4. PER, 5. RAI, 6. ALO, 7. ROS, 8. VET, 9. KOB, 10. SCHU

On to Q3.  First one out was champion Sebastian Vettel as the clouds rolled in and cooled the track temperature by a few degrees.  With two minutes left the action picked up for a final shootout.  Fan favorite and local boy Fernando Alonso puts his Ferrari on the second row in third  The day would belong to Lewis Hamilton as he snagged PolePosition just before stopping on the circuit. The surprise of the day has to be Pastor Maldonado in the Williams.  Strong performances by the Lotus drivers as well.  This is how things shaped up : 1. HAM 2. MAL 3. ALO 4. GRO 5. RAI 6. PER 7. ROS 8. VET 9. MSC 10. KOB

With the tyres being so critical, have we seen the end of super fast qualy runs with everyone saving tyres?
