The Final Word On Lewis Hamilton

by on October 2, 2012

The much-anticipated announcement that came one day later than expected sent shock waves through the Formula One world.

McLaren fans and Hamilton fans alike were devastated as it was announced that the young Brit would flee McLaren for Mercedes AMG.

Some called Lewis greedy, others called him stupid. Once we all take the blinders off, we can surely call him relieved and probably quite happy. We can argue the reasons or merits of his move until the cows come home, however, no one knows the truth better than Hamilton.

There are stories floating about that Lewis was micro-managed, heavily restricted and under immense pressure from McLaren. Lewis did not own his own rights, therefore he was unable to market himself or free to negotiate his own endorsement deals.

It is no secret that there has been some instability with Lewis over the years. Some pointed at his father when he was managing Lewis, others point to the Hollywood influence and his Pussy Cat Doll. I suppose whatever the reason, there was something that was/is straining Lewis mentally. It sometimes became apparent in his performance, one could argue, but we will never know for certain.

At Mercedes, Lewis will have a fresh start, a new team-mate and several new challenges. Going to a mid-field team in the hopes to turn them around has not always worked…(example: Jacques Villeneuve and BAR). Nonetheless, A change of scenery might do Lewis some good. We should not be so quick to dismiss Mercedes. While they have failed to perform at the same level as Red Bull and McLaren, 2014 could see a shift of power with Mercedes in a good position.

Time will tell if Lewis’ move to Mercedes AMG was good for his career AND pocket-book or just the latter. The important thing is that Hamilton is happy.
